St. Francis de Sales is the patron saint of St. Francis de Sales Parish School. His example connects faith with everyday life: a call to holiness expressed through prayer, learning, kindness, and service. In the words associated with the school’s mission, we are called to “live Jesus.”

A life devoted to faith and service

Francis de Sales was born in 1567 near Thorens in the Duchy of Savoy, in a family of noble background. Although his father hoped he would pursue a career in law and public service, Francis devoted his life to the Church. He studied in Paris and Padua, where he developed a deep understanding of theology and law.

Ordained a priest in 1593, Francis volunteered to serve in the Chablais region, where many people had become separated from the Catholic Church. He traveled widely, preached, taught, and patiently welcomed conversations with people who disagreed with him. His gentle manner, clear explanations, and perseverance helped renew Catholic life in the region.

In 1602, Francis became Bishop of Geneva. As bishop, he preached, instructed clergy, visited communities, and encouraged people to grow in holiness through the responsibilities and relationships of ordinary life. He taught that devotion is not reserved for priests and religious communities; every person can seek God sincerely within his or her own vocation.

Teaching holiness in daily life

Francis expressed this vision in Introduction to the Devout Life, a spiritual guide written for people living in the world. He later wrote Treatise on the Love of God, reflecting on the way divine love transforms the human heart. His writing is known for its practical encouragement, warmth, and confidence in God’s mercy.

Francis also worked with St. Jane Frances de Chantal to establish the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary in 1610. He died in 1622 and was canonized in 1665. In 1877, Pope Pius IX proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church, recognizing the enduring importance of his spiritual teaching. His liturgical memorial is celebrated on January 24.

Our patron’s example today

St. Francis de Sales reminds the school community that Catholic education is more than the study of religion. Faith shapes the whole person and inspires a life of prayer, compassion, responsibility, and service. His example encourages students, families, and staff to seek holiness in the classroom, at home, in the parish, and in the wider community.
